Concerns, Request for Classroom Change and Counselor


Most questions regarding your student’s educational program can be resolved with the teacher. Should you have any concerns that cannot be answered by your child’s teacher, please call the principal to schedule an appointment.


Student classroom assignments are made on the basis of a  balance of boys and girls, a mix of ability levels, second language, and the availability of space in other classrooms. Any consideration of a classroom move must be approved by the Principal, after consultation with the parent and teacher. Moves will be considered only after 14 school days and a parent teacher conference. The decision to move a student will be based solely on the educational appropriateness of the situation.


Matheson Park has the services of a ½ time counselor and a part time social worker to work with families and children to implement the APS district counseling curriculum. Our counselor meets with classes, small groups, and individuals. Please feel free to contact our counselor concerning school related issues.


At Matheson Park the emphasis is on Reading and Math as the basis for success in the 21st century. Students at all grade levels at Matheson Park will receive instruction based upon the Common Core State Standards for reading and math. Common Core Standards rely on mastery of concepts and building a sound foundation for learning before moving on to new information. Depth of Knowledge (DOK) or “deep learning” and “rich textual” experiences will require that students learn more complex language and information.

Literacy (Reading) is taught in a 90 minute block and later integrated into other subject areas. Shared reading, writing, guided reading and independent reading are tied to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Mathematics also utilizes CCSS as the basis for instruction with mastery of computational solving as its basis. Please speak to your child’s teacher for additional information regarding their instructional program.
